The Rio Milagro Foundation is committed to ensuring transparency and clarity in our efforts. Since the early 1980s, when The Navajo Sheep Project and the Navajo-Churro Association were established, these organizations have chosen the name "Navajo-Churro" as the official label for Churro sheep with positive intentions. The expressions “Navajo Churro," "Original” or “Old Type Churro," and “Churro sheep” all denote the same landrace breed. We intend to adopt the term “Churro sheep,” a comprehensive label historically utilized by Southwest cultures, to honor the various groups instrumental in the rich history and evolution of Churro sheep in the Southwest. The cultural groups we recognize include the Navajo and nineteen Pueblo tribes in New Mexico and the Colorado Plateau, Spanish communities along the Rio Grande and Jornado Plateau, as well as the Tarahumara, Zapotec, and Mixtec peoples from the Sierra Madres of Mexico, along with Anglo shepherds who have contributed to preserving the genetics and continue to play an important role in contemporary breeding.
